Morning sun ignites fog and lifts it from a hidden river, just behind the first treeline. The trees are softly awakened with the glow. The spartina grass is damp with dew, and the scent perfumes the air with a settling peacefulness.

"This scene is from a real-life place that evokes great emotion. Long before I knew the story of this special location, I knew it felt different than any place I'd been before.

Then I learned what happened there many years ago...

Nestled along Highway 17 between Beaufort and Charleston, this is the place where Harriet Tubman led over 700 enslaved people to freedom during the largest raid to take place in the Civil War. She orchestrated an extremely complicated and heroic effort to bring men, women and children of the surrounding plantations to their new lives as freed individuals.

Harriet Tubman is best known for the Underground Railroad, but in my opinion, the Combahee River Raid of 1863 rivals that accomplishment. Harriet Tubman was prominent in Beaufort, and you can truly feel the spirit and energy in this humbling place.

When driving through, the marsh stretches out in front of you, unhindered and seemingly endless. The paths along the marsh are perfectly perpendicular, signifying the long-gone rice fields that former enslaved people dug. During the spring and summer, alligators dot the waters and drivers beware of them crossing the road. If you happen to have the great opportunity of seeing this place in person, make sure to pull over the boat landing to take it all in. If you don't have time to stop, roll down your windows as you pass through. Let the smell, history and perseverant spirit of this place whisk you to another time.

THIS place is one of my very favorites on this planet. If you're ever lucky enough to visit, I'll personally point you in the direction. It's a place that everyone should know about...

So of course I had to paint it."

"I painted this in memory of my disabled senior pup, whom we had to say goodbye to recently. I painted this to represent Heaven, where I know she is prancing through this grass, wheel-chair free.

I hope you feel peace when you look at it, and think fondly of memories of a loved one who is no longer earthside. I hope you can feel the peace I felt while I painted this ethereal, serene scene.

It took quite a few layers over the course of two weeks to complete this painting. All together, it was around 11 layers to build up the colors, shadows and highlights. The trees have texture and magical, tiny details of whimsical branches. The grass is composed of the most layers and features thousands of blades, that still somehow don't compete with the sky.

Composition-wise, this piece is one I'm most proud of. I love the bright spots in the grass balanced with the contrast of the shadows and how everything seems to be moving from the left and sweeping to the right. It feels like an antique painting to me."
